For most of 2023, Selena Gomez was all about the light, milky manicure. She was feeling neutral, barely-there shades like her shimmery, sheer “angel nails” and a “your nails but better” set with a touch of sparkle. However, for the 2024 Golden Globes, Gomez did a full 180 and went from winter white to glamorously glossy black.
Gomez's go-to nail artist Tom Bachik was responsible for her awards show set; he also created the star's “naked disco” mani for the 2023 Globes. “For our look today, we wanted to have a bit of an edge. Her custom Giorgio Armani dress is such an amazing red with black accents, and we felt the nails should play off that," Bachik shared.
"The black high gloss shine found in the flowers on the front was the perfect inspo. Sel’s natural nails were a great length. Because we were going with a dark color, we decided to go with a shorter nail in a natural shape keeping our look strong and chic.”
After prepping Gomez's nails with the Tweezerman x Tom Bachik Ultimate Nail Care Set and filing them into a medium-length rounded shape, he painted on two coats of Essie Nail Color in Licorice, a true, super-shiny black. To finish, Bachik grabbed a tube of Essie's On a Roll Apricot Roll-On Hydrating Cuticle Oil to hydrate Gomez's cuticles.
The final mani was the perfect pick for her red-and-black asymmetrical Armani dress. It's so shiny, you can basically see your reflection in it, just like a patent leather bag or shoe. (Oh, and all those diamonds don't hurt either.)
Gomez paired the mani with a rosy smoky eye by makeup artist Melissa Murdick, who used all Rare Beauty products for the awards show, and a high, sleek bun by hairstylist Marissa Marino.
Vampy manicures like Gomez's patent leather nails are one of our favorite trends for winter 2024; there's just something about a deep, dark, moody shade that suits the season so well.
Think burgundy, cherry cola, deep purple and classic black like Gomez. Add a shine-enhancing top coat like the Best of Beauty-winning CND Vinylux Long Wear Shine Top Coat for that reflective finish and go collect a trophy of your own.
